The History of Gold Investment

Wars have been fought over Gold.
Love has been expressed with Gold.
Gold has changed the landscape of Civilizations and the World.

The fascinating history of Gold is as old as human history itself. As the first to smelt Gold (3600 BC), the Egyptians also invented the lost-wax technique in 1200 BC, which is still used today in Jewellery making. Followed by them (around 600 BC), Turkey (ancient Lydians) minted the first ever coins for trade, while China started circulating Ying Yuan, a squared Gold coin. Although its long and valued history, due to the rarity of this precious metal, if we could compile all Gold ever mined in the World, it would fit in a 20 m x 20 m x 20 m box and you can be one these who owners a small part of this content and can feel in your hands.

For those lucky enough to afford a measly $35 an ounce back in 1933, you could have had a lot of gold bullion and coins back then, but you wouldn’t have been able to invest in it. As controversial as it was, President Roosevelt passed the Gold act, in which it was illegal for citizens to own gold bullion and had to surrender gold bullion, coins, and notes in exchange for U.S. dollars. Gold investing would have been inconceivable even for citizens that would have been able to conceal any quantities of gold.

Fast forward 13 years later, President Nixon eliminated the gold standard and set an amount of currency based on the price of gold rather than being convertible into actual gold. It was a great way to usher in new economic changes and make trading more practical and feasible. He also allowed private citizens to buy, hold, and sell gold again. At that moment, the true story of investing in gold began and took off in 1970.

Benefits of Gold investing

Gold was often used as an investment vehicle because it had several advantages over other forms of investment, such as stocks or bonds, including:

  • High liquidity as it is easy to buy or sell
  • Low transaction costs
  • Protection against inflation.

Gold is a popular investment among those who wish to diversify their portfolios outside traditional stocks and shares and reduce risk. Over a long period, Gold has consistently held its value against other asset classes and, in the last 45 years, has been shown to have outperformed stocks and shares. As Robert Kyosaki said:

“Commodities such as gold and silver have a world market that transcends national borders, politics, religions, and race. A person may not like someone else’s religion, but he’ll accept his gold.”

For people who want to protect their savings from market volatility, or also for those looking for an alternative way to invest their money, Gold is an excellent investment, not to say safer.
